Frequently Asked Questions
A: Our WoodWalks are made of 100% reclaimed redwood salvaged from pickle brining tanks. They are durable and require no further finishes or wood preservatives. Left as is, they weather to a beautiful silver patina. If you would like to hold the deeper red and brown tones of these redwood products, we suggest you use a simple oil. Oil-based products that absorb into the wood are best. Because this wood often holds salts from its previous life in a brining tank, other finishes are not recommended. The salts are likely to repel other finishes, causing uneven absorption. Our best advice? Go au naturale. Let your reclaimed redwood age with grace.
A: If used en mass for a small patio, there are several ways to prepare the site. • Over turf or sod. You can quickly kill back lawn and lay a WoodWalks patio by laying your tiles over a section of lawn covered with landscapers fabric. Mark out the area. Cut overlapping lengths of lanscapers fabric (black mesh weed barrier) and pin down with wire stakes. Then lay your WoodWalk tiles on top. This will give you an instant, if somewhat lumpy, patio surface for this season. By season's end, the sod will have died back. • Over prepared earth. For a more level patio, we recommend you loosen the top six inches of dirt. Remove stones, sticks and other bits. Use the back side of a rake to level. Then settle your WoodWalks tiles into the soft dirt. Carefully step onto the tiles to settle them into the dirt. If you have drainage issues, you may need to augment site with sand or gravel. • Over sand or gravel. For best drainage under your WoodWalks Path and Patio Tiles, we recommend place one to two inches of sand or pea gravel. Water will drain down through the WoodWalks tiles and into the gravel or sand. Gravel is most resistant to water erosion if you are on a slope or other drainage route. • Over asphalt or concrete. You can arrange WoodWalks Path and Patio Tiles over existing asphalt or concrete surfaces. This will give you a level surface. If the subsurface is slick, use rubber, cork or similar non-skid material. • Over rubber roofing. WoodWalks Path and Patio Tiles are great for rubber roof surfaces. Just be sure to use an extra layer of rubber beneath the tiles, to prevent their corners from piercing the surface. • On a green roof. Please find your local green roof professionals to help you design and install a green roof. We can make recommendations for decking pedestals.
A: Salt! Some of our redwood has absorbed so much salt from its pickle brining days that, once sawn for WoodWalks, it excretes salt. That's the white residue you see. It is completely harmless, for plants and animals. Salt residues can be brushed off with a damp cloth. Exposure to weather will also rinse off salts.
