About Reclaimed Wood

pickle brining tanks of redwood ready for salvage Acres of redwood tanks like these at Bick's Pickles, become our raw material

‘Reclaimed wood’ comes from all sorts of structures: old barn wood, timbers from industrial warehouses. At I’m In the Garden, we use reclaimed wood called ‘tank stock’.

This is old-growth wood originally selected for use in storage vessels or tanks. Its flawless grain allowed each vessel to stand ‘water-tight’ through the integrity of the wood alone. From the 1800’s through the mid 20th century, wooden tanks were used for holding wine, water, beer, and--pickles.

WoodWalks products are made out of redwood salvaged from pickle tanks. This wood has absorbed salts from the brine it held, visible in the patina of our ‘I’m In the Garden’ Tags, and sometimes on freshly cut surfaces. You may see dowel holes in the bottom cleats of your Woodwalks, more past-life reminders.

Reclaimed wood tells its own unique story.

More on our wood source
We buy our wood from Duluth Timber Company (FSC-certified), one of the oldest in the reclaimed wood business. They are based beside us in Duluth, Minnesota with a second mill in Edison, WA. Tank stock is one small part of their reclaimed wood business. More at www.duluthtimber.com

Natural Decay Resistance

Our products are made of redwood rated #1 in natural decay resistance. This wood grew in old-growth trees and was selected for its heartwood perfection to serve as tank stock.

According to the Forest Products Lab, heartwood redwood exceeds both cedar and cypress in its decay resistance. That means no pesticides or chemical preservatives.
